Medicare Supplement · Medigap
Cover more of what Original Medicare leaves unpaid.
A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy works with Original Medicare. It helps pay your share of hospital and medical costs so bills are more predictable.
Who this is often a good fit for
- People who want to see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare
- People who travel or split time between states
- People who prefer a monthly premium over variable copays at the doctor or hospital
- People turning 65 who are still in their Medigap open-enrollment window
How Medigap works
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) pays a share of covered services. You still owe deductibles, coinsurance, and copays — and Original Medicare has no yearly cap on those costs.
Medigap is private insurance that fills many of those gaps. In most states the plans are standardized by letter (Plan G, Plan N, and others). A Plan G from one company covers the same medical benefits as a Plan G from another; the difference is usually price, service, and household discounts.
You generally need Part A and Part B to buy Medigap. You cannot use Medigap with a Medicare Advantage plan. Prescription drugs are not included — you add a separate Part D plan if you need drug coverage.
What Medigap is designed to help with — and what it is not
| Topic | Original Medicare only | Original Medicare + Medigap |
|---|---|---|
| Doctors | Any provider that accepts Medicare | Same nationwide access |
| Your share of medical bills | Part B coinsurance is typically 20%, with no annual cap | Many lettered plans pay most of that coinsurance after the Part B deductible |
| Hospital stays | Part A deductible and daily coinsurance can add up | Most popular plans help with Part A cost-sharing |
| Prescription drugs | Not included | Not included — add Part D separately |
| Dental, vision, hearing | Generally not covered | Generally not covered by Medigap |
| When you can buy it | — | Best window is usually the 6 months after Part B starts at 65. After that, medical underwriting may apply in Texas. |
What Angelo does
- Explains lettered plans in plain language (what G and N actually pay)
- Compares premiums for the plans available to you — not a sales script
- Checks whether you are in a guaranteed-issue window so you do not miss it
- Helps you add a Part D drug plan that matches your medications
- Reviews coverage each year as premiums and drug lists change
Common questions
Is Medicare Supplement the same as Medicare Advantage?
No. They are two different paths. Medigap adds to Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage replaces how you receive Parts A and B, usually with a network. You generally choose one path, not both.
Does using an agent cost more?
No. Angelo’s Medicare help is at no cost to you. Carriers pay the same commission whether you enroll on your own or with a licensed agent.
Can I keep my doctors?
With Medigap you can see any provider that accepts Original Medicare. Confirm that your specialists still accept Medicare assignment.
What about prescriptions?
Medigap does not cover retail drugs. We look at a separate Part D plan using your medication list.
When should I call?
If you are within a few months of turning 65, leaving a group plan, or paying high out-of-pocket costs on Original Medicare, call before the window closes.
